Residential Services

HCDSN provides limited residential placements for critical need adults with Mental Retardation/Related Disabilities or Autism. Residential opportunities for persons with head or spinal cord injuries are under development.

Several residential choices are offered, with varying degrees of supervision and assistance provided. The type of residential placement selected is determined by the needs of each individual and recommendations of the staffing committee. In this way, each person is able to assume as much responsibility for his/her life as possible, while receiving the necessary level of support, assistance, and protection.

Availability is determined by the "Critical Circumstances" of the consumer and their family/care givers, which is determined by the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs.

At present there are lengthy waiting lists for residential placement.

Residential options:

Community Residential Care Facility

Two eight-bed residences (one for men and the other for women) are located in Conway, SC. These residences provide care for individuals who require careful supervision. A nurse is available at all times to administer medications and address health concerns.

Community Training Home I

This is a private family home where one or two individuals receive training, guidance and services while living in a family environment.

Community Training Home II

In these homes four men or four women live together in a family-like environment with caregivers present around the clock. At the present time ten such residences are located in various communities in Horry County.

Supported Living II

In a supported living environment, individuals live in apartments with twenty-four hour on-site staff supervision. Training in independent living skills and home management is provided along with socialization opportunities.

Currently there are nine apartments in the same apartment complex, each of which houses two men or two women. A tenth apartment serves as an office and social gathering place. The apartments are located in Conway, South Carolina.
