Spinal Cord Injury Peer Support Group, August 16th, 2010
Cindy Walker and her sister, Debbie,
attended the meeting on August 16th at the New Horizons
Center along with Ellen Leftwich.
We had a great
Bojangles meal. The
conversation was pretty far flung.
But, eventually it landed on the need to expand our group.
Cindy wanted to know what was keeping some people from coming
to the meetings and suggested we do a survey.
After our
discussion, we came up with 3 questions:
-
Why aren’t you coming to the meeting?
-
Would you prefer to meet at another location such as the library, restaurant, church, someone’s home?
-
What do you think a Support Group should be?
You may receive
a call from Ellen or Cindy about these issues.
We may also put it on the website or send it to you.
Another
suggestion was using the SCSCIA food allotment funds to defray the
cost of eating at a restaurant or going to a local attraction such
as Dixie Stampede. Since
the allotment is $40, it would mean that if 10 people go, they would
get $4 off the cost of whatever.
Ellen will have to check with Diane Epperly of SCSCIA in
order to find out whether that would be possible.
Cindy also
suggested speakers at each meeting or something educational.
We are having Dawn Porter, Benefits Specialist, as a speaker
at this next meeting.
Dawn is a dynamic speaker and knows the benefits system inside and
out. If you have any
questions about working and benefits, you really need to come to
this meeting.
Cindy was on
fire at this meeting.
She talked about the need for the support group to do outreach by
contacting hospitals and doctors about the program and to offer peer
support at a personal level.
