Brain Injury Support Group Minutes for August 19th, 2010

We had a great meeting with the group at Damons on Thursday, August 19th.  It was nice to sit and relax while looking at the beautiful ocean panorama.  We all considered taking a dip in the ocean before heading back inland.  Not sure that a couple of folks didn’t jump in!!

In attendance were:  Tracy and Wanda Stevens; Peggy Hanson; JoAnn and Carla Ritchie; Mary Brennan; John Daigle; Tom Gaines; Pat and Ben Kiziu; Ellen Leftwich; Dana Burroughs; Sukie Pease; David James; and Lesley Trinkley.

After the welcome and introductions, Ellen went over a few items.

There are really no budgetary changes.  However, Medicaid changes are coming.  Anyone that has Medicaid, regardless of whether they are on a Waiver program or also have Medicare, will receive information requesting that they choose a Managed Care Organization (MCO) or a Medical Homes Network (MHN) or continue with a fee-for-service plan.  IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE, MEDICAID WILL CHOOSE A PLAN FOR YOU.  Please talk to your primary care physician and your pharmacist for information on the various plans to see which one will be best for you.  Doing nothing is an option, but could lead to a plan that is not good for you.

On September 21st, HASCI Rehab Supports is going to Ripley’s Aquarium.  The entrance cost is $6.50.  Please call Ellen if you would like to meet us there and go through Ripley’s for this wonderful price.  The group is also going to eat at the Aquarium.  The cost of the food is fairly reasonable but you should plan on about $10 for the meal.  (P.S. It’s Mary’s birthday, too.)

Everyone loved meeting at a restaurant since there was no cooking by meeting attendees!  After some discussion, the group decided to go to El Cerro Grande.  By the way, during the meeting we talked about the El Cerro Grande by Conway Walmart.  We decided that the El Cerro Grande at Carolina Forest would be more centralized for those coming from Georgetown North Carolina.  It is on the corner of 501 and Carolina Forest Blvd.  3779 Renee Drive, MB.  (843) 903-1188.  Come and join us.  (P.S. It’s Dana’s birthday!!!)

Finally, we talked about the Sports Mobility Sports Festival October 16th.  This is an adaptive sports exhibition and should be interesting for all those involved and who come to watch.  Of particular interest is the exhibition basketball game on Friday, October 15th.  Local celebrities will be up against wheelchair athletes, which should be interesting!

The topic for this month was what could you change or improved either personally or with the group?

There wasn’t much response to this.  I think people were too busy enjoying the conversation and the food to really concentrate on anything else.  Which is really the point of getting together, don’t you think?

In October, we will be going to the Living Farm.  LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED!!!  We will have lunch either inside in the meeting room or outside on the picnic tables.
