Brain Injury Support Group Minutes for January 19, 2012

This was an eventful meeting.  It is an auspicious start to a new year!!  Present at the meeting were:  Tom Gaines, Sukie Pease, Jim Ryan, Carla and JoAnn Ritchie, Wanda and Tracy Stevens, Carolyn and Phillip Pollock.  John-Paul O’Brien, Michael Lynch, Pat and Kate Thompson, Mary Brennan, and Ellen Leftwich.  After a very tasty lunch, thanks to all the contributors, Ellen started with the news that HASCI is going to move to a new location.

Disability Advocacy Day is March 7th (see article). Once more we are looking for personal stories to give to our legislators.  It is effective.

Next we discussed the First Annual Brain Injury Awareness Walk.  After a lengthy discussion, we determined that it would be held on Thursday, March 15th, on our regular BISG meeting date.  (See below)

This meeting also did what Support Group meetings should do best – provide support.  Thank you to those who shared their feelings and to those who listened and supported.

The First Annual Brain Injury Awareness Walk

Our First BI Awareness Walk will be held Thursday, March 15th in Conway, SC.  We hope to take advantage of the Conway Crawl that is held every Thursday evening.

A t-shirt will be designed.  The t-shirt will be free to anyone who pre-registers for the Walk.  Shirts will be $5 at the event.

An information booth will be set up to pass out brochures on TBI, answer questions, etc.  This booth with be co-sponsored by the Horry County ThinkFirst Chapter.

The route needs to be finalized as well as the exact time of the event.  Information will be available online by February 10th.  Registration forms will be posted online and sent out via regular mail for those that that receive the newsletter in paper form.

We are hoping to gain some kind or recognition from the City of Conway for the Walk.  The presentation will hopefully be made on the stage in front of the New Horizons Center.

We are working on a local celebrity as the presenter.

Stay tuned for more information and come walk with us!!

Traumatic Brain Injury News and Information

Brainline.org has been compiling articles from many news sources about Traumatic Brain Injury.  It has become a particularly good resource for people who received mild to serious TBI’s in the line of duty.

Concussion continues to be prevalent in both sports and the military.  The constant exposure of this silent epidemic has begun to move people to recognizing the symptoms and getting appropriate treatment.  But, there is still so far to go.

Pass this website on!  It could be the difference between someone getting the treatment they need or continuing to suffer in silence.

Support Groups are there for support!!

During the last BISG meeting, we were reminded just what the group is there for – support.

It takes an act of faith in those around us when we bare our feelings.  Feelings of frustration, anger, and hurt, are a part of everyone’s life.  It is crucial to share those feelings when they become overwhelming.

Remember support is available more than during the monthly meetings.  And remember, you may be both the provider and the receiver of support.

If you need someone to talk to, call Ellen at (843) 349-7250 or another member of the BISG.
